Year 6 were honoured to meet Mr Pickering, a veteran from World War 2. Mr Pickering served in the navy and was stationed around the world in places such as Singapore. Year 6 were enthralled to find out more about his experiences and the impact on him and his family. It is important that we learn from heroes such as Mr Pickering about the personal impact of the war and we can never forget how much people have given so we enjoy freedom today.

It wasΒ wonderful to see the huge variety in activities and experiences the children encountered during Art Week. We had clay sculptures, autumn collages, nature trails, Starry Nights with Van Gogh. self portraits, string prints β¦the list goes on! Take a look on Twitter to see some of our amazing work.
A wonderful day today where the children explored many of the different countries across Europe. We travelled from Romania, to Spain, to Italy, to Germany, to Norway and to France! The children loved finding out more about our friends across Europe and experimenting and learning different languages. The continental cafe was a huge success with children and families enjoying a tasty croissant or two. Tres bien.
It’s back by popular demand : Disconnect to Reconnect! As a school community we are taking the lead and finding ways to enjoy life without technology. So we are putting down devices and finding more meaningful things to do to encourage our children to develop healthy lifestyles. We look forward to hearing about all of the exciting things you’ve been up to. Enjoy!
Thank you to the many parents and carers who have came along to our ‘Meet the Teacher’ sessions to find out more about how you can support your child with their learning at home. Please don’t forget you can call in at any time to discuss your child. It’s important we work together.
We have been learning all about one of the greatest explorers ever: our very own Captain James Cook. To make our learning as rich as possible and to help us to remember all about his fantastic achievements we have been writing and performing our Captain Cook song with the help od our school musician, Joe Hammill. You can listen to us sing it on Twitter!
The St Patrick’s green and white army made their way in huge numbers on Saturday to watch the mighty England lionesses take on the samba stars from Brazil. Despite vocal support from children, parents and staff England suffered a 2-1 defeat. A fantastic day out to see our national team in action. Thank you to Mrs Holtby for organising yet another great sporting event for us to attend.
March 17th is not just a big day in Ireland but a big day for St.Patrickβs school and parish family. The day of celebration was kicked off with prayer for staff flowed by Mass at St.Patrickβs Church. The primary school was joined by Year 7 pupils from St.Patrickβs College and children from St.Patrickβs house at Christ the King School. Parishioners commented on how wonderful the singing, prayers and dance were in the very uplifting celebration of the Eucharist. Parish priest Fr.Pat OβNeill, a native from Tipperary, told the children they were honouring a tradition that stretches back for many generations. βYour parents, your grandparents and maybe even your great-grandparents went to St Patrickβs School and were part of this faith family,β he said. βBe proud of your green blazers and jumpers and let everybody know youβre proud it because this wonderful tradition is a huge part of Thornaby life.β Fr Pat also blessed a banner for the Catholic community in Thornaby which was kindly donated by the parish and will be taken on special pilgrimages to Lourdes in France.
After Mass, parishioners were invited into school for afternoon tea and Irish dancing. Pupils from Scoil Rince Γ Muir school of Dance danced and were even joined by assistant Head Kevin OβDonnell at one point. Local violin legend Mike Flynn entertained guests and accompanied by Cattle and Cane frontman Joe Hammill. A good day was had by all and the craic was mighty!
